Paint Protection Film Cost: Why Nobody Will Post You a Price
Every other page answering this question opens with a confident national table. This one opens with what happened when we went and looked. We read the websites of 22 shops listed in this directory on 2026-07-30, service page first, and counted who published what. 5 of them published complete ceramic coating price lists, tier by tier. Exactly 1 published a film figure.
That gap is the finding, and it is not laziness on their part. Film is cut for one model year and fitted around panels that come apart to different degrees, so the number does not exist until someone has looked at the car. What follows is the one market we can quote with a source, the six things that actually move a quote, and the questions that let you hold two of them side by side.
One shop in twenty-two publishes a number
The clearest single piece of evidence came from one business rather than from the count. Pro Detailing HG publishes three ceramic coating prices on its coating page. On its film page it lists three packages under the heading “Starting prices for Sedans” and prints no numbers underneath. A shop perfectly willing to publish prices for one service withheld them for this one, on the same website, on the same day.
The others read the same way. HQ Details runs dedicated pages for coating, correction and film and carries a figure on none of them. MintyPrecision lists all three services with the word Quote where a price would go. Paint Protection Inc is a film specialist by name and takes quotes by phone. These are recorded as findings rather than as gaps in the search, because a trade declining to publish is itself the answer to what film costs.
The one figure found: DetailsThatMatter in Brooklyn lists film from $2,000. The one published NYC PPF figure, DetailsThatMatter from $2,000, falls inside the article band for a full front end, $1,700 to $2,800. One data point landing where a published band says it should is worth stating, and it is not enough to build a calculator on. That is why this page does not have one.
What coverage buys in the New York metro
Film is sold by coverage, not by vehicle size, and the jump between coverage levels is far larger than the jump between a sedan and an SUV at the same coverage. These bands come from our own New York City metro article and describe that market only. They are not a national figure and should not be read as one.
Protects full hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors, headlights.
| Coverage | What it protects | Typical NYC price |
|---|---|---|
| Partial front | Partial hood and fenders, bumper, mirrors | $900 – $1,500 |
| Full front end | Full hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors, headlights | $1,700 – $2,800 |
| Track package | Full front plus rockers, A-pillars, roof edge | $2,500 – $4,000 |
| Full body | Every painted panel | $5,500 – $9,000+ |

Six things that move the number, and what to ask about each
Since no table will price your car, the useful skill is reading a quote. Each item below changes the figure materially, and each has a question attached that a shop can answer in one sentence. Two quotes that answer all six the same way are finally comparable.
Coverage map, panel by panel
Two shops can both say "front end" and mean different panels. A partial hood stops part way up; a full hood runs to the windshield and costs more film and more labor.
Ask: Which exact panels are included, and does the hood coverage stop part way or run full?
Wrapped edges or cut edges
Tucking film around a panel edge takes disassembly and time. A cut edge leaves a visible line and a place for dirt to sit. This is often the whole difference between two quotes.
Ask: Are the edges wrapped, and which panels come off to do it?
Paint condition before the film
Film locks in whatever is under it. Swirls and etching have to come out first, and that correction is a separate job with a separate price.
Ask: Does this quote include correction, and if the paint needs it, what does that add?
Pattern or bulk install
A plotter pattern is faster and consistent. Bulk film cut on the car takes longer and depends more on the installer, which cuts both ways on price and on result.
Ask: Is this cut from a pattern for my exact model year, or from bulk on the car?
Film brand and warranty term
Warranty length tracks film cost. A ten year warranty film and a five year film can sit in the same package at different prices.
Ask: Which film, which warranty term, and is the warranty with the maker or with the shop?
Removal later
Film comes off eventually, and removal is billed labor. It is the cost buyers forget and the one almost never quoted up front.
Ask: What does removal cost when the film reaches the end of its life?
Film against a coating, and against a wrap
These three get compared as if they competed, and they solve different problems. Film is a physical layer thick enough to absorb a stone, which is why it costs what it costs and why it goes on the panels that face forward. A coating is chemistry: it makes the surface easier to clean and holds gloss, and it stops nothing solid. A wrap changes the color and shields the paint underneath while it is on, but it is vinyl chosen for appearance rather than film engineered to self-heal and take impact.
The combination most buyers land on is film across the front end and a coating over everything else, including over the film. That protects the panels that take the damage and makes the rest of the car easier to keep clean, and it costs far less than covering every panel in film. If you want the coating side priced, the New York ceramic coating guide publishes a full ladder, and the wrap cost estimator handles the third option.
Film cost questions
Why will no shop quote paint protection film over the phone?
Because the honest answer depends on panels they have not seen yet. Twenty-two shops in this directory were read directly, and five of them published full ceramic coating price lists while only one published a film figure. The same businesses that will tell you what a coating costs go quiet on film, which says the reluctance is about the service rather than about secrecy. Film is cut to a specific hood on a specific model year, and the labor swings with how much comes apart to tuck the edges.
Is a cheaper film quote just cheaper film?
Sometimes, and the faster tell is the edges. Tucking film around the lip of a panel means removing lights, mirrors or bumper hardware, and that labor is where a quote separates from a lower one that plans to trim on the car and leave a visible line. Ask what comes off before you ask what brand goes on, because two shops quoting the same film can be quoting very different days of work.
Does a ten year warranty mean ten years of film?
It means ten years of coverage against yellowing, cracking and delamination under the terms the maker writes, which is not the same promise as ten years of good appearance. City film lives a harder life than film on a garaged weekend car. Worth asking who honors the warranty, the manufacturer or the shop, because a shop-backed warranty is only as durable as the shop.
What does it cost to take film off?
Removal is billed as labor and it is the number almost nobody asks about while they are buying. Older film that has been through several New York winters comes off in pieces and takes adhesive work afterward, so it is slower than the install in the worst cases. Ask for the removal figure at the time of the quote, when the shop still wants your business.
Does the paint need correcting before film goes on?
Film magnifies whatever sits under it and then locks it there for years, so swirls and etching have to come out first. That correction is a separate job with a separate price, and it is the most common reason a written quote lands above a number quoted casually in person. On a new car off the truck it may be a decontamination wash and nothing more, which is part of why film is easiest to buy early.
Is full body coverage ever the rational choice?
On a car whose paint is expensive to refinish, or one where resale turns on original panels, the arithmetic can work, and the New York band for every painted panel starts around five and a half thousand dollars. On an ordinary commuter it rarely does, and a full front end plus a coating on the rest of the car covers the panels that actually take stone damage for a fraction of it.
Get the quote
Since the number only exists once somebody sees the car, the next step is booking two shops and asking all six questions above. Compare installers in New York City or across Brooklyn, and if the glass and the interior are on the same list, the window tint cost estimator and the detailing cost guide price those the same way.
