Headlight Restoration Cost, and What the Price Actually Buys
A mobile detailer will do both lenses for $50 to $100. A shop that sands to bare plastic and sprays a cured coating will charge $150 to $250. A kit off the shelf is $20 to $40.
Those are three different jobs wearing the same three words, which is why quoting this service over the phone produces such wild variation. The gap is not markup.
And before spending any of it, one measurement is worth having. AAA tested this and found restoration returns roughly 70 percent of a new headlight’s output. Not all of it. That single figure decides which tier you should be shopping in, so this page starts there rather than ending there.
What does headlight restoration cost?

Why does the same job range from $50 to $250?
Headlight lenses are polycarbonate, and polycarbonate on its own does not survive sunlight. So every lens leaves the factory under a hard coat, a cured polyurethane layer that absorbs the punishment instead of the plastic.
That layer is the part that fails. Sun, moisture, wash brushes, grit and road chemicals break it down until it hazes, then crazes, then goes yellow. AAA puts the onset at 3 to 5 years off the production line, which surprises anyone who files this under old cars.
So the yellow is mostly dead coating rather than dead plastic. Sanding removes it. Every grit step works toward one endpoint: clear polycarbonate with nothing left on top.
Which is also the trap. At that endpoint the lens carries less protection than it did while it was still yellow, so it looks superb for a season and then degrades faster than it did originally. Nothing stands between the sun and the plastic any more.
That is why the ladder above is really a coating ladder. The polish is not what you are paying more for. What you are paying more for is the coating that follows it, and a wiped sealant, a sprayed urethane and a lamp-cured hard coat are three genuinely different products.
A quote that does not name the coating is a quote for a polish.
What does restoration actually give back?
Most pages on this subject offer a before and after photo and stop there. AAA ran instruments over it instead, and the numbers are worth having before any money moves.
Deteriorated lenses emit about 22 percent of what a new headlight emits. That is the case for acting at all, and it is a stronger case than appearance alone: at speed, the shortfall is stopping distance.

Both the professional and the DIY restorations AAA tested produced more glare than DOT criteria allow, because sanding and polishing do not reproduce the optical surface the lens was molded with.
Seventy percent for a hundred dollars is a good trade. It is roughly 3.2 times the light on the road tonight. It is still not a new headlight, and a shop promising one is overselling.
Is a kit worth it?
Kits run $20 to $40 and every one holds the same three things: an abrasive, a polish, and something protective. The better ones give you a real grit progression. The cheap ones give you a sponge.
Note that AAA measured no advantage for the professional job on light output alone. Both landed at the same 70 percent. What the money buys at the top of the ladder is durability, not brightness.
A kit makes sense when the haze is light, when the car is worth a few thousand dollars, or when you own an orbital and enjoy this sort of afternoon. Budget ninety minutes for a first attempt.
It makes no sense on a lease return, on projector or adaptive optics where glare tolerance is tight, or on a lens with crazing deep enough to catch a fingernail. Your result depends less on which kit than on whether you sand evenly and actually apply the protective step rather than skipping it once the lens already looks fixed.
How long does a restoration last?
By coating, with the basis for each shown rather than asserted:
Wipe-on sealant
Consumer Reports found non-permanent aftermarket solutions haze noticeably after roughly a year. Reapplication is part of the product, not a failure of it.
Sprayed urethane or acrylic clear
Trade-reported. Described as lasting many years longer than a DIY sealant, without a published test figure attached.
UV-cured hard coat
Coating chemists report limited degradation after three years of Northeastern US exposure, and formulations exceeding 5,000 hours of accelerated xenon weathering under ISO 11341.
Where the car sleeps matters more than most people expect. One that lives outdoors facing south loses a restoration in half the time of one under a carport, and a weekly trip through a brush wash does the same thing.
If you are paying for the top of the ladder, it is worth knowing the coating is working against a load you partly control.
When is replacing the lens the better buy?
Sooner than most people assume. Run the numbers whenever one of these is true:
- The lens is cracked or chipped through.
- Moisture is collecting inside the housing.
- The reflector behind the lens has gone dull or spotted.
- Crazing has reached into the plastic and you can feel it with a fingernail.
- Night visibility is a safety problem rather than a cosmetic one, and the gap between 70 and 90 percent matters.
Aftermarket assemblies for an ordinary vehicle open around $150 a side. Parts only. Xenon, LED and adaptive assemblies sit well above halogen ones, and OEM parts generally run at least double their aftermarket equivalent.
On an older commuter, a pair of aftermarket assemblies against a top-tier restoration is a close call, and the assemblies win on light output. On a late model luxury car it is not close at all, and restoration is plainly the right answer.
What should you ask before booking?
Five questions, and the answers sort shops faster than comparing their prices does.
What goes back on the lens after sanding?
This is the whole price ladder in one question. Wiped, sprayed and lamp-cured are three different products with three different lifespans, and a shop that answers with a product name is selling the job you think you are buying.
Are you sanding, or polishing only?
Polishing alone brightens a lightly hazed lens and cannot reach oxidation that has gone deeper. It is a legitimate cheaper service, and it should be priced as one.
Is the coating warranted, and for how long?
A one year guarantee tells you which coating is going on, whatever the invoice line says. Nobody warrants a wipe-on sealant for a year.
Does this happen on the car or do the assemblies come off?
Removing the assembly lets the whole lens be worked evenly and keeps overspray off the paint. It also adds labor, which is part of why the top tier costs what it does.
What happens if it hazes again in six months?
The answer separates a shop that expects its work to last from one that expects you not to come back. Ask before the work, not after.

Is a hazy lens something an inspection can fail you for?
Depends where you live. Several states fold lamp condition into the safety check and leave it to the inspector, who can write up a lens that scatters the beam or dims it. Very few set a numeric clarity threshold, so it lands as judgment rather than measurement. Commercial plates draw tighter scrutiny than passenger ones. Reading your own state inspection manual settles it faster than phoning around, since inspectors and detailers are rarely working from the same document.
Does insurance pay for this?
Almost never. Comprehensive and collision respond to damage events, and five summers of sun is wear rather than an event. The exception is a lens broken during something you are already claiming for, where the new assembly simply rides along with the rest of the repair. Filing on its own makes little sense anyway: the deductible on most policies is larger than the entire job.
Does it pay off before selling a car?
Better than most hundred dollar improvements. Yellowed lenses read as neglect from across a parking lot and color everything a buyer notices next, which is why dealers run trade-ins through it as routine. For a private sale the cheapest tier does the job, because what you are buying is an impression that has to survive one weekend rather than protection that has to survive four winters.
Do toothpaste and bug spray work?
Toothpaste is a mild abrasive, so it does badly what proper paper does well, and it will lift a light haze for a few weeks. Bug spray appears to work because the DEET in it softens and dissolves the surface it touches, which is damage rather than cleaning, and the softened plastic fouls again quickly. Neither leaves any ultraviolet protection behind. One of the two tricks is harmless and the other is not.
Can one side be done alone?
Physically yes, and plenty of shops will, but the mismatch shows. Freshly cut plastic and aged plastic sit at visibly different color temperatures, and from directly in front of the car that difference reads worse than the original yellowing did. Pricing for a pair usually sits close enough to a single that little is saved. The one situation where it makes sense is a new assembly on one corner, where matching was already lost.
